Residency Program Vision, Mission and Goals

Our vision

Physicians with the knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of clinical preventive medicine focusing on promoting health, preventing disease and managing the health of communities and defined populations will work to reduce health disparities, decrease disease burden and improve health outcomes for all people, especially the people of Mississippi.

Our mission

To equip physicians with the necessary knowledge and skills for improving the health of individuals and populations by identifying health needs, designing, implementing and evaluating health services and managing the health of individuals, communities and defined populations with a focus on reducing health disparities, decreasing disease burden and improving health outcomes and who will successfully attain board certification in the field of Public Health and General Preventive Medicine (PHGPM) after completion of training.

We will accomplish this mission by:

  • Providing residents with a range of academic, clinical, public health and population-based experiences to develop the knowledge and skills needed to practice PHGPM independently and to improve the performance and outcomes of the public health and health care systems in order to improve health outcomes on both the individual and population levels. These experience are designed to teach the ACGME six core competencies of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice and their outcome measures for this specialty.
  • Cultivating within the department and residency an environment that emphasizes excellence in research, excellence in patient and population care, quality improvement, patient safety, professionalism and a commitment to the well-being of all members of the health care team.
  • Modeling and mentoring by faculty the value and importance of the health care team, scientific curiosity, problem-solving skills, intellectual rigor and the effacement of self-interest that supports the professional development of physicians.    

Specific goals of the training program include: 

  • Educating on the principles and practice of public health, clinical preventive medicine and population medicine
  • Educating on the underlying determinants of health, causes of health disparities, and approaches for reducing disparities
  • Developing skills in the core functions of public health practice, health systems change, quality improvement, patient safety and population health management
  • Developing skills in clinical care and clinical prevention
  • Developing skills in working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders to improve health outcomes
  • Developing skills in the conduct of research to improve the health and well-being of patients and populations
  • Promoting scholarship and leadership in public health and population medicine
  • Promoting life-long learning
